Recommendation Corner: Abrazos, San Miguel Designs by Patrice Wynne

Shopping has changed in a big way as consumers become more conscientious about fair trade, humanitarian rights and cultural respect. Choosing businesses that respect and honor these issues has become a critical way to show support of ethical practices. Abrazos, home of Patrice Wynne’s San Miguel Designs is a perfect example of a company who supports these goals, empowering communities of rural women in Mexico, and selling beautiful and unique designs.

Here is a little about Abrazos by Patrice Wynne.

“Inspired by the colors, symbols and artistry of Mexico, I arrived in San Miguel de Allende in 2000 after closing my independent bookstore, GAIA, in Berkeley, and fashioned a new life as an ex pat in this legendary colonial city. A serendipitous meeting with a Mexican seamstress evolved into San Miguel Designs, a fair trade company hiring mothers and daughters from San Miguel to create and design my collection of aprons, handbags, dresses, kitchen wares and playful, useful objects that add a touch of Mexican fiesta to your everyday life. Today the San Miguel Designs Collection is sold in museums, boutiques and airport stores throughout Mexico, and has been featured in books, magazines, and museum collections.

“After promising myself that I would never under any circumstances open another retail store, in 2010 we launched our flagship store, Abrazos Boutique featuring San Miguel Designs. Abrazos is located in the historic center of San Miguel de Allende near the Jardin between the Instituto Allende and Bellas Artes, the famous art schools. I chose the name Abrazos which means “embraces” to convey the warmth of the Mexican people.

“Often during the day at Abrazos, burros bearing firewood, vendors selling tortilllas, and processions of worshippers carrying virgins and saints pass by the store. Each morning the seamstresses arrive with babies on their hips, and elder grandmothers for support, delivering their handwork made with love and pride in their cultural heritage.  Mexico’s traditions are recognized worldwide. San Miguel Designs celebrates Mexican culture by using Mexican themed fabrics from all over the world.

“San Miguel Designs and Abrazos Boutique are a feast for the senses, filled with “The Perfect Gifts from San Miguel”, original products rich in Mexican flavor: aprons for cooking and play, fashionable dresses, adorable baby bibs, men’s shirts and ties with Days of the Dead motifs, stylish fashion handbags, dreamy eye masks, whimsical luggage tags and many more. The magic of the San Miguel Designs Collection is our seamstresses, our employees, our appreciative customers and our joy in creating products that are 100% Original, 100% Mexican and 100% Made with Heart.”
